Now here is a movie that is near and dear to my heart. The one and only “Monster Squad.” This movie is the epitome of battle against darkness movies/shows. This movie paved the way for movies/comics/stories/shows that are based on fighting evil such as, “Supernatural,” “Constantine,” “Grimm,” and many more of people fighting against evil.

The story is about a group of middle to teenage kids including one little girl who love horror movies and comics. They join together to form what they call, The Monster Squad. In order to get in to the group you must answer horror trivia. However, a book has surfaced from the past that can shift the balance of good and evil to favor one side. The Monster Squad representing good and Dracula, The Mummy, The Werewolf, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, several vampyresses and Frankenstein who is neither good nor bad are searching for this book. In order to stop the evil a virgin must read a passage from the book with a jewel to send the evil beings to another dimension. That is fine and dandy but the cool thing is how The Monster Squad fights. This is where I always wanted a bow in arrow. The cool kid uses the bow to strike the vampyresses in the heart killing them and shoots The Mummy’s wrapping against a tree unraveling and therefore killing him. The Werewolf gets blown up by dynamite but the pieces comeback together so they melted silver and made a bullet to kill him because you know kids in middle school know about smelting and gunpowder and how to make bullets. It is part of their education. Anyway at the end the group was successful with the only virgin in the neighborhood being a 6 or 7 year old girl. The evil was sent to another dimension all but Frankenstein who was spared because he is easy to disguise.

I greatly enjoyed this movie especially when I was younger. But be warned there are so weird going ons in that movie. Like an old German man inviting 5 teens into the house to give them cake and other goodies (because that is normal). Anyways this movie made me more fearless when I watched it as a young boy, and by the way these costumes were actually very good for the time period this movie came out, pretty realistic. This movie made me want to grow up and fight monsters to save the world. Though this did not go as planned, but I did enjoy this movie and it is fun for young kids. I think even nowadays they could appreciate this movie, though the monsters are no longer really as scary as past generations found them to be but I am sure there could be another “Monster Squad,” in the works, and those who remember this movie would love to see that modern version.
