Double Feature: “Don’t Blink” and “Vanishing on 7th Street”

Let us go head and delve to two more movies that are similar in story.  These movies feed on the fear of loneliness and darkness and unable to control your destiny even if you fight for it.  These independent movies brought some old faces back to action including Mena Suvari and Hayden Christensen and even a face I have not seen in a long time John Leguizamo.  Both movies have similar ideas but different perspectives.

We will start with “Don’t Blink,” which takes place in a forest resort hotel.  A group of friends go to the mountains to a resort to get away from the world.  What they discover there is terrifying?  Apparently nobody is at this hotel.  No owner, desk clerk, maids, other people, no one at all.  The friends split up to see if they can find anyone yet even more of a disturbing thing has been notice. There is no sound as well, meaning no animals or insects just nothingness.  As the friends explored deeper into the hotel and cabins they found nooses, baby cradles, and many other things but no bodies to be found at all.  The group stayed together to figure out what was going on and they soon found out.  As one of there friends drop an alcohol bottle he went to pick it up.  Out of sight from all his friends he never came back up.  The girl he was talking to screams.  He completely vanished without a trace.  This happened several times.  When I guy was getting something from a fridge he opened the door and his female friend who once was there no longer was after he took his eyes off of her. This happened over and over.  Until there was one girl left and she was placed in a cop car surrounded by law enforcement and fire rescue and as she leaned down and closed her eyes to get her breath back all of them vanished.

“Don’t Blink,” was a very unique movie.  It was creepy and thrilling and definitely freaks out your significant other when you tell her, “Don’t Blink,” and then hide.  This story gave you a freaky feeling and made you feel like it could happen to you.  This was a new type of horror that expresses loneliness to the max.

“Vanishing on 7th Street”

Hayden Christensen plays the leading role in this movie with some good support from John Leguizamo and Thandie Newtown.  John Leguizamo plays Paul, a mall security personnel who while at the mall the power went out.  Not to weird unless you consider the fact when the light came back on everyone in the mall was missing all they left were their clothes.  This happened throughout the city of Detroit. All people went missing unless they were near a positive light source such as flashlights, candles, etc.  The survivors of this pandemic join together at a local bar that has been lit up by a generator that a young boy was running.  The survivors now panicked notice what had happened.  As the lights went out the shadows stole the people and brought them to there realm.  So voices of the residents of Detroit are heard but are driven to capture more people.  The movie becomes quickly thrilling when the group notices the days become darker faster the lights are fading quicker and the shadows no where the group is and wants to get them.  In the end the young boy and a young girl leave the city on horseback as the sun goes down on Detroit.

Summary

I enjoyed both movies greatly.  Though independent they definitely delve into loneliness and darkness more so than modern horrors due today.  The plots were good the events were disturbing, both movies I found are greatly entertaining.
