This movie provided me with a lovely recollection of my past. I remember taking a vacation with my cousins and us hooking a TV/VCR up in there beautiful custom van and starting to watch movies. As I sat there in the car, my cousin placed this unique movie into the VCR. The movie was entitled, “The Witches.” We began to watch it unknown by me what I was getting into while watching this movie. Granted I was the second oldest child in the car but this shit was freaky. The movie was probably one of the most disturbing movies I watched at the time without even realizing it. Now looking back I wonder what the hell are parents were thinking. Haha.
This movie is about a young man who is placed in a huge predicament. His grandmother told stories to him about the old country where she grew up, particularly about a special group of children killers called Witches (Yes actual witches: potions, magic, chanting, etc.). The opening scene fucks with you. The grandmother was talking about a child who was kidnapped by a witch and magically placed inside of a painting where she lived out her days until she died. This is not the only thing that happened. The young man’s mother and father die in a car crash right of the back of this child horror. What else could go wrong? Well the grandma who has been telling him the stories of the witches with there purple glowing eyes, bald heads, and elongated twisted fingers who love to just murder children becomes his guardian.
After some time has past his grandmother and him (Luke) travel to a seaside hotel for a vacation. Little did they know about a meeting taking place where all the witches of the world have joined together to talk about what else but murdering children. The High Witch who is there leader had created a potion in which it would turn all the children in the world to mice so they be murdered by not only the witches but others who just hate mice. Excellent plan but young Luke was in the meeting room when they decided to talk about this plan. Well that screwed him. They captured him in and instantly changed him to a mouse. The rest of the movie consisted of him trying to stop the witches in there vicious plot and live happily ever after.
This movie was an excellent movie. I did enjoy it immensely however once looking back on it and realizing it was about murdering children it kind makes you question your youth. The special effects and makeup were excellent for the time. The magic and adventure were great as well but in the end it was about murdering children. That is never a good thing. I do recommend watching it I did enjoy it and it did have a happy ending but as an adult looking from that scope it was disturbing. Thank you.
