Welcome to another edition of A Child’s Nightmare. Today we are going to be looking at and talking about that classic Disney movie where a Beast can do whatever he wants to a fair lady because her dad decided to cut out the Beasts heart. This movie has recently come back big since 1991 due to the live action presentation of the movie that came out just this year starring Emma Watson. I have not seen the live action version but have been told it is very similar to the cartoon of the 1991 and that I have seen. Knowing this the crossover and explanations are going to be based off the cartoon not the new version until I have seen it. Then we will modify.
Beauty and the Beast is supposed to be a love story but really it is a terrifying story of victimization and Stockholm Syndrome. The movie starts out explaining what happened to the Beast. Apparently, the Beast was a Prince of sorts who was narcissistic and an asshole to people he did not think were worthy of his time. This happened when an older lady came to the door on a dark night asking for help. The lady was old and poor looking and so the Prince made up some excuse and set her away from his manor. The lady now angry decided to ask again and by using a magic spell she became a beautiful young maiden and approached the manor again. This time the Prince allowed her to come in and that is where he fucked up. She then turned to the hag she once was and cursed the Prince and his servants because they too did not try to help. Turning him into a Beast of a Man and his servants to living furniture. Until she felt him worthy again. Not scared yet. Well how about this for a shot.
Years after the curse was placed on his manor a father was leaving town to make a living when he went down a road. He then got into an accident and ended up near the Beasts Manor where he went looking for help and to stay out of a storm. While exploring he came upon a rose garden. His daughter Belle wanted him to give her a rose when he returned home. Well this man who just entered a strangers house decided to cut a rose from the garden essentially cutting the Beasts heart out. Yeah the Beast is pissed. And captures the old man.
Belle the female lead of this story wants to save her father and decides to go after the Beast herself. She then trades her freedom for her dad’s. This puts her in the worst predicament ever. She is now essentially a slave to the Beast and no one will come near the manor knowing that a monster lives there and therefore allowing him to do whatever he wants to her because she sure could not overpower him or stop him in any way. Furthermore, one of the most overlooked horrific nature of this movie is the Beasts servants. They have all been transformed into furniture, candelabra, clocks, tubs, dishes, etc. That has got to be the scariest thing of all for Belle and the Beast. Essentially, she is always being watched and not to mention she will bathe in the servants, expose herself to them when she changes clothing, eat off of them, defecate and urinate inside them for the rest of her life. Also to further show the dangerous and deadly nature of the Beast, we must remember the West Wing of his manor. Belle was forbidden to go there yet she does and that is when you see the horrendous nature of the Beast. Throughout, the entire West Wing furniture has been torn apart, shattered, broken, dismembered, and utterly destroyed when the Beast learned of his curse, so essentially if part of the curse was to turn all of the servants into furniture, the Beast killed an entire wing of servants so if ever the curse was to be lifted and they to return to their human forms an entire wing would have a river of blood and painting of dismember, murdered, corpses from the rage of the Beast.
I enjoyed Beauty and the Beast like any other person but as I got older and started to catch on to other things within the realm of movies I have decided that this is a horror movie. The Beast massacring his servants, his servants stalking and young maiden, a father cutting the heart from the beast and the dark nature of the manner makes a convincing horror movie. But it is a movie and as a child you will not catch it, but as an adult be scared.
