Well I am not on a mission for religious purpose but I have been watching more horror movies that involve religious undertones. So, with no further explanation let us delve into Stigmata.

This movie from the 90s featured Patricia Arquette being possessed. Patricia Arquette plays a beautician who is into partying and living life to the fullest. Her mother than sends her a rosary that was stolen from a priest that recently passed. The priest was a former employee of the Vatican and was shunned due to the translation of a gospel unknown to others. After, Frankie (Arquette) received these items she started to see hallucinations and delusions. While taking a bath one night she received the first part of the stigmata. Stigmata is the wounds Jesus received during his torture and eventually death upon the crucifix. Her wrists and feet became pierced during a hallucination and therefore she was marked. After a night in the hospital she left and tried to live her life as she did before but now being labeled as someone who attempted suicide. Upon riding on a subway she then received the lashes that Jesus received when being whipped during his trial. This time it occurred in front of a priest and he collected the video tape of the subway and sent it to the Vatican. Upon research a Father was sent to help her by the Vatican. This father was a scientist and looked for fake miracles and found none with her. Upon helping her she was drawn deeper into a state of psychosis or religious rebirth as the Stigmata became more active.

This was a very interesting movie. It held some conspiracies toward the church and the Catholic belief system. I will not argue religion with anyone because it is to dangerous but it is also something society should view. I have my own belief system and so does everyone but this movie makes you wonder how religion is such an important factor in humanity and the choices we make because of it. This story was designed to make you question it and I will start writing the conclusions of movies I have watched but this one I will give you a preview. The ghost who possessed Frankie was a Catholic Priest who help translate from Aramaic, a Book of the Gospel that was said to be written by Jesus. The gospel stated this, “The Kingdom of God is inside all of you. Not in buildings made of wood and stone. Split the wood and I am there, crush the stone and you will find me.” This was why the Vatican took so much interest in this case.

The movie was written well and the belief system and battles felt true. The horror of it all was not blood and guts but visual outburst that caught you off guard. Will the movie strike fear in you. No, but it will make you question some things.
