One Page Horror Stories: Poke it with a Stick

Johnny and Alex love exploring the world. It was mysterious and vibrant, and not to mention there was nothing much to do in there small town. A beautiful day for a fun adventure.

One day they decided to go into a wooded area near there town to see what they could find. They walked deep into the forest. “Hey Johnny look!” Alex pointed to a stream where the carcass of some unknown creature lie in waste.

“What is it?” Johnny asked.

“Looks like an animal.” Alex responds as they move closer.

The two young boys walked slowly towards it fearing that it might be still alive. The foul smell penetrated there nose with such fury they both gagged a bit. The body lie dormant as the maggots, fish, and flies feast. “Grab that!” Johnny orders Alex. As he looks at a stick that Johnny was pointing at on the ground.

Alex grabs the stick and walks toward Johnny. “Poke it!” Johnny exclaims. “It will be really cool.”

“What?”

“Yeah. I want to see what happens?”

Johnny backs away. “Poke it, Alex!”

“Ok… Here we go.” Alex lifts the stick to the side of the rotting mound of flesh as he presses gently. The stick sinks deep into the side instantly releasing the pressure into a stagnant discharge of unyielding stench. Instantly overwhelming the boys since of smell. The carcass explodes sending flesh, rot, and maggots bombarding Alex as Johnny pushes away from him and heads toward town. As Johnny runs he turns and sees Alex vomiting black bile and falling to the ground. The flesh and innards of the carcass now lying in the stream flowing out in a red and black dye into the stream.

Four weeks later as the quarantine on the town was almost lifted. The quarantine was established two weeks earlier when the town became rampant with death and disease. A multifaceted task force was formed to investigate what happened. It consisted of the FBI, CIA, FDA, EPA, FEMA and many scientific organizations. The Marines were called in to provide security for a tour group entering the hot zone. As the group enter the main road through the town the stench of death hovered in place. The remains of the town folk were so distorted that recognition would be impossible without dental records. A sound echoed through the town. “A Survivor!” They thought and ran toward the sound that came from the diner. The group entered the dining room where they took notice of a figure in the corner. There was Johnny his flesh seemed to almost fall from his bones as black bile poured from his eyes. One of the doctors approached and just as he reached out Johnny vomited the black bile soaking the doctor. Two shots from the Marines echoed throughout the town square.

TO THE READER: This was a fictitious story I wrote several months ago, before the pandemic struck. So, I apologize if you think this is not in good taste. But I believe it is something that we should realize. This is something we should all take seriously. Many movies were made about these issues. “Contagion.” “Pandemic.” “Cabin Fever.” and a slew of other movies that focused on these problems and what people should do. I know I do not write much about stuff but I fear these problems like everyone else but I wanted to take the time to say. Thank those who are out there on the front line everyday dealing with this problem and many more such as: Grocers, Doctors, Nurses, (Anyone working in the hospital or medical fields.) Fast Food, and countless others. Pray for those who are sick, friend or foe. And take care of yourself and distance yourself to control this issue. Be respectful to those who are trying to prevent the spread of this virus. Donate if you can to those in the community and in many outreach programs such as Red Cross. And be kind to one another. Everybody needs toilet paper, soap, cleaning supplies, and other highly sought after groceries so not everybody is out at the same time. So, share. Let us get through this together.
