Short Stories By A.N. Modine: Ventilation

The alarms blasted throughout the huge underground bunker. The largest of its kind. The survivors froze in fear as they listened to the warning that blasted relentlessly throughout the alarm system. “WARNING! WARNING! DEADLY GAS!” A mother and her daughter listened in horror for the call out. “DEADLY GAS! DEADLY GAS! EVACUATE BLUE ZONE FOR FACILITY SHUT DOWN!”

The mother tells her daughter. “That is us sweety we must go. As she grabbed her daughter and sprinted outside of there apartment.

The mother was intercepted by a man who began hacking up blood. “Help me!” He screamed as he reached up for the mother. He began vomiting blood as he grabbed his stomach. “It burns. Eliza!” He began to collapse on the floor as his eyes began bleeding.

“Don’t Look!” She covered her young daughters eyes as she held her daughter tightly and began to run. “We must make it to the gas masks Mae.” As she sprinted towards the main access door of the Blue Zone.

“WARNING! WARNING! DEADLY GAS, DEADLY GAS!” Eliza placed Mae onto the ground as she grabbed her arm and pulled her tightly behind her as both now ran towards the main access doors where the gas masks were located just down the hall.

“Mommy you are hurting me!” Mae cried out.

“Sorry baby but we must hurry to the masks! You must run for mommy! Run as fast as you can!” Eliza turned her head as the lights flickered down the hall and a glowing green gas flowed from the ventilation system.

WHAM! A door flies open, “It hurts so bad-HACK-COUGH- a woman falls from the room gripping her stomach as the blood pools around her eyes. The mother looked at her as she fell down from the room. As she glanced up she saw the room was filled with the gas that was traveling down the hall. She noticed a man who was holding a child had fell just behind the lady as a pool of blood surrounded them.

“Keep moving honey, we are almost there sweety!” Eliza said to Mae. “There is the door we must make it through that glass door baby!” She pointed to the access door that was slowly closing for the lock-down. “Oh No!” She thought as it began to lock-down.

“Faster, Mae! Faster!” Eliza exclaims as she pulls Mae’s Arm tightly.

“I can’t move any faster!” Tears poured from Mae’s eyes as she cries.

“Yes, you can baby. Do it for mommy!” Both Mae and her mother began to sprint faster as if she a guiding hand was pushing them from behind. They sprinted towards the door and as it was about to seal Mae’s mother pulls her daughter with her strength and tosses Mae on the other side of the door. She then turns sideways and takes a leap of faith and slides between the two doors before they latch shut, falling to her back over her daughter.

-THUD- the door shakes as a young man and his baby slam into the plexiglass sealed doors. The baby still in his arms as he punches the glass. “NO! NO!” He stares at Eliza as water fills his eyes and as the tears form. She looks at them as the tears once clear have turned into a crimson tint and with the last of his strength in desperation he kicks the door repeatedly until he begins to cough up spurts of blood. He slowly pulls from the door and looks at the lifeless body that is in his arm. He holds his baby to his chest as he falls to the ground.

A mournful state where Eliza started to tear up and slowly wraps her arms around Mae as there moment is interrupted by a loud siren once again followed by another announcement. “WARNING! WARNING! DEADLY GAS, DEADLY GAS! ENTERING GREEN ZONE!”

“NO! NO! We must go baby, we must get to the masks!” Eliza snatches Mae up. “NOW! We must move.”

Mae still tearful cries, “Mommy that hurt mommy!”

“I know baby but we got to move.” Eliza continues, “Cover your ears and put your face in mommy’s shoulder! I have you!”

“Yes, mommy.” Mae acknowledges.

Eliza grabs her and presses her against her body. She turns to the fallen man, still saddened. But then she notices the gas has made it too the Green Zone as it enters through the vents in the hall here Mae and her were just at slowly making its way to them. “No! No! Not, yet!” She gains her second wind and sprints towards the end of the hall now faster than before and without hesitation.

“What’s wrong? Mommy. What’s wrong?” Mae interludes.

“Nothing baby. Hold tight and close your eyes.” Her chest tightens. She had never ran this much before and she was starting to get tired. She kept reminding herself she will not lose her daughter and pushed on in desperation. She reaches T-Intersection and turns abruptly. Falling to the ground and sliding. “Sorry, Mae mommy fell!” She breathes harder. She thought to herself we made it. Just down the hallway the masks were waiting for her. But as she looked up she saw the carnage that is mankind. She saw that others have arrived before her and as beasts back against the wall starving and wanting to survive the others were attacking one another with such viciousness at any other time people would tremble from this destruction.

Men and women were stabbing and beating each other to lifeless pulps. Eyes were being gouged out and blood and visceral stained the floors red. It was a massacre of unprecedented events. When a failure to plan will cause a human to go mad. Not enough gas masks but way to many people.

“Mae, listen to mommy! Hide over there behind that sofa. Do not look over here. Cover your eyes and ears and do not look until you here mommy!” As she pointed to as sofa.

“But, mom?”

“NOW, MAE!”

Frightened Mae shook, “Yes Mommy.” She ran towards the sofa and dived head first into the pillow wrapping it around her head and ears face down.

“Good, girl Mae.” Eliza smiled as she began to turn towards the crowd of untamed beast. She charges full speed and spear tackles the first man in her line of fire. Knocking him to the floor she grabs the back of his head and repeatedly strikes it against the floor with every crack giving way to the floor until the body was no longer moving. -WHACK- She gets punched across the face throwing her off the lifeless body and crashing through a chair. The woman that hit her started to charge. Mae’s mother dodges as the lady passes her. She then grabbed the leg of the broken chair as the lady who just attacked staggers to her feet. Eliza grabs the leg and connects with the side of the ladies head. Knocking her to the floor. She then repeatedly connects to the ladies head until nothing but a pulp lied lifeless on the ground.

Eliza turned to looking desperately for a mask for her daughter and her to use to share if need be and as her eyes darted side to side she saw him. One man desperately clinging to a mask on his blood soaked shirt. There eyes met and the look that Eliza gave him was like a lion staring at a gazelle. He knew he was the next victim of Eliza’s desperation and began to charge toward his family who was just down the hall. He turned run. His family shouting for him. He lifts up his arm to toss the mask and as he does Eliza was already behind him. A sharp pain penetrated through his lower organs. Blood sprayed out as the broken leg entered his back and exited his front. Eliza pulled it free as she snatched his mask and then she hit him in the head with the leg for good measure. The man’s family fell to there knees as he collapsed. But Eliza got her treasure and turn running towards her daughter. The family shortly after was enveloped by the gas.

Eliza yelled for her daughter. “Mae, it is mommy? Where are you?”

“I am here mommy.” Mae called out. She raised her head from the pillow on the couch. “I was scared mommy.” Eliza ran to her to hold her closely.

“This is for you, Mae. Mommy got it for you. Put it on like Halloween, okay baby.” Eliza lifted Mae’s head to help with the mask and as she did she looked at her beautiful daughters face. A bloody tears rolled down her face as Mae looked at her mother.

“I hurt mommy.”

“You will be fine baby.” Eliza began to cry red tears of love.
