Sanctuary Part III
The snarls and growls grew fierce as I ran towards the commotion. The moon shined down on me threw the trees. The only light that I had at the moment. There in the distance I saw her. She was exhausted from running so long. She no longer had the vigor she once must have had when she first was being pursued. As I watch the scene unfurled, I see the three wolves in hot pursuit. I was just out of range. “Hold, strong little girl.” I thought as my legs pushed me forward in this moment with an unusual speed.
The girl had run out of energy and began to slow. The wolves now ran in a full sprint. They were playing with her. They were running her until she could no longer move her legs so they may have an easy kill. I finally made it in range of the final pursuer when I stopped my self and drew down on my bow. But it was nearly to late. The lead wolf had caught up and bit deeply into the girl’s calf. I hear the bone snap in her leg as he pulled her to him and tossed her to the ground beside him so the other wolves could encircle her. “No!” I yelled towards the wolves as I released the arrow from my bow catching the rear wolf in his rib as he cried out in pain.
They took notice of me now realizing that I may be a threat and the second wolf turns towards me with his yellow eyes staring at me with extreme ferocity as it snarled. The lead wolf was not down yet the girl lay in front of him as he swipes a claw at her face ripping the flesh from her jaw. She screamed, but it did not stop her. She kicks and swung her fist at the wolf fighting for every ounce of her life connecting it with his face and snout. I charged towards the wolves for a better shot as the second wolf charged towards me. I did not grasp its speed as every second it took for me to draw my bow again the wolf had gain ten to twenty feet on me.
It was too close I could not raise my bow before it tackled me to the ground, knocking my bow from me as it started to bite at my neck. I swung my arm in front of it as it bit down hard impaling my skin. The wolf jerked its head back and forth trying to snap my arm off. I swung with my fist to knock it free, yet its, jaw was locked tight dragging me by my arm. I reached in my belt and freed my dagger. Now, with every swing I stabbed the long blade into its throat and ribs. It whence at each thrust. But still locked on my arm. I eventually made it to my knees and swung faster than it expected stabbing where ever the blade may lay. I felt its jaw loosen as the blood splattered onto the ground and trees until the wolf fell to its side gasping for air and with my arm now freed. I grab my dagger with both hands and plunge it deep into the chest of the wolf piercing its heart. A horrendous cry echoes through the forest as the leader of the pack stares at me with such anger I quake as my eyes connect with it.
The wolf slashes the girls face once more as it stands tall above her looking at me. The girl is no longer moving, was this battle for naught. The wolf then leans down once more and bites deep into the little girls’ shoulder, she cries out in agony as she faints once again from the intense pain. The wolf tosses her to the side and stares at me.
Though I cannot speak the language of the animals, like people say I do. Stating that I make animals do my bidding for me because demons can speak to beasts, I knew this wolf was taunting me, telling me that I am going to die. I pull my dagger from its partners side and stand as tall as I could to show him, I do not fear him. But it knew I was terrified and snarled at me gritting its teeth with an almost human like smile. It lowered its head and with a large blood curdling howl it charged. Shaken but knowing if I was going down, it will be with a fight I charged at it.
